I just had my first lesson, and I drove a VW Golf diesel.
(1 or 2 years old)
This was not really my first, but my first ''official'' lesson.
In what car did you learn to drive?
Edit: Wow!, Does every American own or drive a pick up? seems like it.

Yep. A tahoe with even worse outward vision was what I learned to drive in. I got bonus points in the parking segment when I parallel parked this bitch like a boss. Why is that something to brag about? Take a look at the rear. You have very l;imited visibility through that little slit window and the buttresses don't help much either. You basically use a combination of intuition and side mirrors to do it right.

First car I drove was a '99 F-150 (to which I am filled with nostalgia for and still search for a car that gives me the same feeling that truck did) and learned on that and a '98 Suburban.
Once you learn on behemoths like them you can drive anything.

I learned how to drive stick in an afternoon. Honestly, parking a large vehicle and learning the placement of your wheels at all times is far more difficult than learning to use a manual. I think you need to pass more tests and licensing to operate an SUV, it is THAT different to do sometimes.

The first car I drove was a 1998(IIRC) Ford Escort. It was my mom's car and my dad let me drive it in a parking lot when I was maybe 1w years old. When I got closer to driving age, my oarents took me to the school parking lot in our 2002 Explorer and later the 1988 Bronco they got me as my first car. The first time I drove on the road was in the Bronco. I drove a 2000ish Malibu in driver's ed and I took my road test in my father's 2007 Fusion V6.

I learned to drive by field bombing in a Chrysler k car (until it died), and then around the ATV track in the back yard in a Ford Escort 3-door hatchback Pony (until it died) and a Hyundai Excel (until my cousin wrecked it). I learned to drive on the road in a manual '87 Jeep Wrangler. It sounds Redneck-y, but I gained so much confidence driving those junk cars around the track. I spent many hours behind the wheel just practicing. The Driver's Ed car was an 03 Corolla and I took my test in it too.

Not exactly sure of the year, but it was a 1982-ish Chevy Caprice. Nowhere near as ballsy as the 1977 Caprice we had before it. My stepmother took me to a cemetery for my first lessons. Aside from the message one gets from driving around a bunch of dead people, it really was a good place to go, lots of turns and no other drivers to worry about.

This bad boy right here.
I actually have kind of an irrational soft spot for that car. The interior was horrible (prairie-flat seats, horizontal speedo), but for its day, I thought the exterior paint and trim looked sharp on that uninspiring shape. The wheels and tires (Goodyear Eagle GTs!) were pretty upscale, too. It was a harmless car for a new driver, too, although the 135-hp (or so) V6 was peppier than most sedans of the time.

I was 'taught' how to drive a stick when I was 14 in my dads Suzuki Samurai.

The first stick I drove on public roads was a Nissan compact pickup, I think. I learned to drive properly speaking with a diesel 80s Suburban and IIRC a '74 Benz 240d, after initial drivers' ed instruction in a ~98 Chevy Cavalier. I'd previously been driving the other two on our property a bit, and the first car I actually ever drove was a 1963 Plymouth Fury 4-door.

Debate? There is no debate. I like the monte carlo SS for what it was intended for. I make no apologies for that. Then again my other car I learned on was my mom's 2001 monte carlo SS which was nearly identical to the one below except she has different wheels on hers. So I guess I drove the monte carlo without any preconceptions of a bad/good car to drive. I also had a 2008 monte carlo SS as a loaner car when my dad and I were repairing the valve stem seals on the audi. It was way more enjoyable than I imagined it would be.

This, what is now MY truck, is really the first road vehicle I ever drove, and that resulted in almost running over a picnic table. The real way I learned to drive and control a motor vehicle was driving quads/tractors. You can learn a lot starting like that.
(That picture is pretty outdated at this point)
![]() 11/21/2013 at 18:55 |

I stand by that statement for two reasons.
1) that was outright trolling the FP. My MC was a pile of goat shit.
2) because it was a complete POS, it was immensely enjoyable to fling around with abandon. Plus it was so random what it would do in a corner, I had a certain amount of perverse pride in being able to wrangle such an awful mess of a car.
See, you beat people with a miata and they accept it because you have a miata. You beat people in a 1997 Monte Carlo and their mind is blown. I guarantee you the time I was hanging with SRT neons and BMWs in that car, I had a feeling of glee and fun that just wouldn't be had in a better car. Of course, that was simply me in a bad car. I could've been in any number of bad cars and had the same feeling....but sssshhhh! I wanted to mess with balaban.

Meh. I made enemies already for saying the FRS is not amazing. If they want to disagree, go ahead. I maintain beating people in a POS is more fun than walking all over everyone in a superior car.

Duh. Chevrolet and Pontiac have had their entire lineup based on a zerg rush strategy for decades now. You don't need to be 'better' if you can move more units. So they made everything incredibly simple and relatively robust. To its credit my own MC went over 200k despite decades of abuse and disrepair. I finally sold it to a guy who needed the engine since the subframe had been damaged from the dozens of AutoX races and smaller accidents it had been in had damaged the frame which was now rotting in the MI salted snow.
Doesn't mean I can't find things to praise about the car. I'd go so far ad to say GM bothering with the Monte at all was a sign they gave more than half a shit about their lineup.

Which car did I learn to get from A to B?
A 2002 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2l. I'm from a generation in Britain that have been denied cool cars to learn in, although there are a couple of old-school hatches that still have charm (Peugeot 106 for one).
What car did I learn to drive in?
My Alfa 156. It's the first car that has egged me on, to seek the redline, to find how high the limits of traction go. It's the first car I've developed a bond with, and I don't foresee selling it any time soon.

God fucking damn it.
I had a similar Integra - except my copy had a splotch of Primer on one side from the rear door back, the passenger door lock is busted, I had no radio or air-con, windshield is leaking and if I wanted to start it, the battery tends to be dead to the point that I had to replace so many alternators (Note: The fan switch is faulty when it kicks on AFTER I turned off the car, draining the battery and forcing the alternator to constantly work harder charging the battery too.)
I miss it, though.
